James Hillman was an American psychologist and lecturer of international renown, best known as the founder of archetypal psychology, a post-Jungian current that revalues fantasy, myth, and image as legitimate ways of understanding the psyche. Trained at and later director of the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich, Hillman moved between academic and publishing worlds: he taught at universities such as Yale, Syracuse, and Chicago, and helped found the Dallas Institute for Humanities and Culture.

Author of more than twenty books, his central work Re-Visioning Psychology (1975) proposed shifting the focus of psychological inquiry back to the soul and the archetypes, influencing debates about method, symbolism, and imagination in clinical practice. In 1997, The Soul’s Code reached the New York Times bestseller list, broadening his notoriety beyond specialist circles.

A critic of twentieth-century reductionist approaches, Hillman advocated a phenomenological practice toward dreams and symptoms, summed up in his motto “stay with the image.” His legacy influenced later authors and helped reintroduce mythology, art, and philosophy into contemporary psychological discourse.
