Sir James Rögnvald Learmonth was a Scottish surgeon noted for pioneering advances in peripheral nerve surgery and for significant contributions to surgical practice in the 20th century. Trained at the University of Glasgow, he built his career between Scotland and the United States, conducting research at the Mayo Clinic that influenced his technical and academic methods. He held surgical chairs in Aberdeen and, most notably, in Edinburgh, where he trained generations of surgeons and maintained a substantial scientific output. In 1949 he performed a lumbar sympathectomy on King George VI, a procedure that led to his being appointed Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order and to surgical duties with the royal household in Scotland. He also received honors such as the Lister Medal (1951), honorary fellowships and honorary doctorates from several European and American universities. His legacy includes both technical innovations in nerve surgery and lasting influence as a teacher and institution builder, placing him among the leading surgeons of his era. He died in 1967 and is remembered by the medical community for his operative skill and academic impact.
