American writer and playwright James Leo Herlihy became known chiefly for his novels and for stage work adapted to film. The author of All Fall Down (1960) and the well‑known Midnight Cowboy (1965), several of his works were turned into movies, establishing him as a significant figure in the literary and cultural scene of the 1960s. He also published The Season of the Witch (1971) and collections of short stories, in addition to plays such as Blue Denim, produced on Broadway in 1958. Having attended Black Mountain College and the Pasadena Playhouse College of the Theatre, Herlihy worked across literature, theatre, and acting, taking part in stage and film productions such as In the French Style (1963) and Four Friends (1981). His theatre work included productions of Edward Albee’s plays as well as his own productions staged in Boston and Paris. Politically active, he signed statements opposing U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War and supported tax‑refusal campaigns as a form of protest. Close to writers such as Tennessee Williams and Anaïs Nin, Herlihy left a body of work notable for its exploration of urban themes and complex human relationships in the 1950s–1970s.
