James Dewey Watson was an American molecular biologist and geneticist best known for his central role in elucidating the structure of DNA. In 1953, together with Francis Crick, he proposed the double helix model of DNA, work that earned them—and Maurice Wilkins—the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962 for discoveries concerning nucleic acids and the transmission of genetic information. His academic career included positions at Cambridge and Harvard and, above all, leadership of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), where he increased funding, expanded research, and sharpened the institution’s focus on molecular biology and cancer studies. Watson also played a role in organizing large-scale scientific efforts, contributing to the early stages of the Human Genome Project. He authored influential works such as the textbook Molecular Biology of the Gene and the personal account The Double Helix, which disseminated methods and narratives of molecular biology to both specialist and general audiences. His career combined significant scientific contributions with public controversies: remarks on race and intelligence and conduct described as misogynistic later led to the severing of honorary ties with institutions such as CSHL. Watson’s legacy is therefore twofold: transformative scientific pioneering and an ongoing ethical debate about conduct and public responsibility in science.
