James Whitmore was an American stage, film and television actor whose career spanned more than five decades and included over 150 performances. A Yale graduate who moved from football to the drama program, he won recognition onstage and on screen for versatile roles across drama, westerns and war films. He received major awards, including a Tony, an Emmy and a Grammy, and earned two Academy Award nominations — Best Actor for Give ’em Hell, Harry! and Best Supporting Actor for Battleground. In film he was notable in titles such as Battleground, The Asphalt Jungle, Kiss Me, Kate, Them!, Oklahoma! and Tora! Tora! Tora!, playing characters ranging from military leaders to prominent historical figures. His one-man portrayal of President Harry S. Truman in Give ’em Hell, Harry! drew broad critical acclaim and led to one of his Oscar nominations. On television he appeared in numerous classic series and anthology programs from the 1950s through the 1980s — including The Twilight Zone, Wagon Train, Twelve O’Clock High — and in televised dramas about historical events, such as I Will Fight No More Forever. Whitmore also hosted programs and appeared in soap operas and TV movies, maintaining a steady presence in American popular culture. His legacy is that of a reliable, respected performer who worked with equal authority on stage and in front of the camera, leaving a wide-ranging body of work that influenced generations of dramatic actors.
