James Howard Woods is an American actor known for intense roles and a talent for fast-talking, morally ambiguous characters. Over his career he has earned major honors, including three Emmys and a Golden Globe, and received two Academy Award nominations — Best Actor for Salvador (1986) and Best Supporting Actor for Ghosts of Mississippi (1996). Originally trained in political science at the University of Massachusetts, he began on the college theater scene and moved quickly to Broadway, establishing himself in film and television from the 1970s onward. His filmography includes both cult and commercial titles such as Videodrome, Once Upon a Time in America, Casino, Contact, and The Virgin Suicides. Woods has also worked as a voice actor in popular productions and appeared in notable television series, showing versatility as both lead and supporting performer. Critics regard him as a brilliant interpreter, able to bring psychological intensity and verbal precision to his characters, a reputation that keeps him significant in the history of American cinema.
