Janet Blair (Martha Janet Lafferty) was an American actress and singer whose career spanned film, television, and musical theatre. Beginning as a musician—she played violin and sang with orchestras—she made her film debut in 1941 and appeared in a string of studio productions throughout the 1940s, including comedies, musicals, and film noir. Among her best-known titles are My Sister Eileen (1942), Tonight and Every Night (1945) and I Love Trouble (1948).
From the late 1940s Blair shifted her focus to television, accumulating appearances in series and TV movies over the following decades; she was a regular on the series The Smith Family (1971–1972), playing Betty Smith in 39 episodes. At the same time she remained active on stage: she toured in South Pacific (1950–1953) and starred in the British production of Bells Are Ringing (1957–1958).
Her later film work was more occasional, with sporadic roles between 1957 and 1976, including a British horror film in 1962. Recognized for her versatility in singing, dancing, and acting, Janet Blair is remembered as a multifaceted performer of postwar American entertainment.
