Jean Alexander, stage name of Jean Mavis Hodgkinson, was a British actress with a solid stage career and wide recognition on television. After training with amateur troupes and gaining extensive experience in repertory theatre, she also worked as a costume designer and stage manager before establishing herself as a professional performer. In the popular imagination she became especially identified with Hilda Ogden, a character she played for more than two decades on Coronation Street (1964–1987). That performance earned her the Royal Television Society Award in 1985 and a BAFTA nomination, while turning Hilda into an icon of British television culture and prompting fan campaigns when she chose to leave the series. She later became a recurring figure on the comedy Last of the Summer Wine, playing the mean-spirited Auntie Wainwright, and remained a regular presence on TV until 2010. Her screen work also includes appearances in Scandal and productions for children and British television. Author of memoirs and active in local causes in Southport, she also devoted herself to gardening and community projects, leaving a legacy both for the longevity of her career and for her association with beloved characters.
