Jean-Claude Skrela is a central figure in French rugby, known both for his playing career and for a long tenure as coach and administrator. A dynamic back-row forward, he was part of the squad that won the Grand Slam in 1977, standing out for his speed, combative defense and effectiveness in attack; he was also honored individually with the Midi Olympique Oscar in 1976. At club level, his association with Stade Toulousain was decisive: after an early end to his playing career to devote himself to the club, he became a coach and led Toulouse to three French championship titles (1985, 1986 and 1989), working in notable technical partnerships with Pierre Villepreux, Guy Novès and others. As national team coach (1995–1999), he guided France to two consecutive Grand Slams (1997 and 1998) and to the final of the 1999 Rugby World Cup, leaving a legacy of tactical modernization. He later served in national technical leadership roles (2004–2014) and was involved in the governance of French rugby, participating in commissions and on the federation’s board. Recognized for forming technically influential partnerships and for successfully bridging on-field performance and administration, Skrela is remembered for his lasting impact on the development of French rugby across several areas.
