Jean Cocteau was a central figure in twentieth‑century French arts, working as a poet, novelist, playwright, filmmaker, set designer, painter and actor. Versatile and prolific, he produced a body of work that mixes symbolism, surrealism and modernism, and he consistently affirmed his primacy as a poet even while moving among multiple artistic media.
Embedded in avant‑garde circles, he collaborated with figures such as Picasso, Erik Satie and Sergei Diaghilev — for whom he designed the sets for the ballet Parade — and maintained artistic and personal relationships with people like Jean Marais, Raymond Radiguet and Édith Piaf. His activity influenced movements and groups of the time, including the musicians known as Les Six.
In cinema he made films rich in symbolic and dreamlike imagery, which earned him recognition as one of the important filmmakers of his time. He also worked in the theatre, staging his plays on major Parisian stages and serving as both director and set designer.
Elected to the Académie française in 1955, Cocteau left a durable legacy through his ability to combine traditional techniques with modernist innovations, producing a multifaceted oeuvre that continues to influence artists in later generations.
