Phineas Taylor Barnum was an American entrepreneur and showman whose career shaped popular entertainment in the nineteenth century. He began as a small businessman and journalist before moving to New York to run theatrical enterprises and manage the American Museum, which combined curiosities, wax exhibits and the first public aquarium in the United States. He used the museum as a platform to promote acts, oddities and hoaxes that brought him wide notoriety. Barnum organized tours for prominent performers, such as the singer Jenny Lind, and created traveling shows that evolved into the circus which, after several changes and mergers, would become part of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. His commercial successes likely made him one of the first millionaires in show business. Beyond his business activities, he worked as an author, philanthropist and local politician: he served in the Connecticut legislature and as mayor of Bridgeport, where he promoted urban improvements and played a key role in founding the municipal hospital. His legacy is mixed — celebrated for innovations in entertainment and criticized for frauds that exploited the public’s curiosity.
