Jean-François de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse, was a French naval officer and navigator whose career combined naval combat with extensive exploratory work. He joined the navy at 15 and distinguished himself in the wars against England during the Seven Years’ War and later in the American War of Independence, where he earned a reputation for his actions in the Atlantic and the West Indies and received the Cross of Saint Louis. Appointed by Louis XVI in 1785 to command an ambitious scientific and geographic expedition to the Pacific, La Pérouse led two ships with a crew that included scientists and technicians, with cartographic, ethnological, economic, and diplomatic objectives. The voyage visited regions as varied as Chile, Pacific islands, Alaska, Macau, the Philippines, Japan, and the coast of Australia, producing scientific observations and reports on peoples and colonies. The expedition’s fate turned tragic: after leaving Botany Bay in 1788, La Pérouse and his vessels disappeared. Wreckage and traces found on Vanikoro in the Solomon Islands were later linked to the ships Boussole and Astrolabe, cementing the expedition’s mystery and legacy as a notable episode of the age of great scientific voyages.
