Jean Malaurie was a French explorer, cultural anthropologist and geographer whose work focused on polar regions, especially Greenland. Also recognized as a physicist and writer, he became a central figure in studies of the Inuit, combining field research, ethnographic documentation and literary production that reached a wide international audience. Author of influential titles such as Les Derniers Rois de Thulé and Hummocks, Malaurie published scientific monographs, travel accounts and numerous articles, and coordinated and inspired series devoted to the human sciences. His work includes detailed geomorphological and ethnographic surveys, as well as audio‑visual recordings and films that helped disseminate Inuit culture. Throughout his career he received honors and fostered interdisciplinary dialogue between geography, anthropology and cultural preservation. His role as a UNESCO goodwill ambassador and the translation of his works into several languages underscore the international relevance of his legacy: valuing the traditional knowledge of Arctic peoples and integrating that knowledge into discussions about the environmental and cultural future of those regions.
