Jean-Marie Bastien-Thiry was an officer in the French Air Force and a military engineer specializing in aerial armaments, known for his involvement in the development of the Nord SS.10/SS.11 missiles. Trained at prestigious aeronautical engineering schools, he reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel and built a technical career before opposing political decisions on the decolonization of Algeria. In the debate over keeping Algeria as a French department and after Charles de Gaulle reversed policy in favor of Algerian independence, Bastien-Thiry became active in groups opposing that course. In August 1962 he led the Petit-Clamart attack against the president, an action that failed to kill de Gaulle but had wide political and judicial repercussions. Tried by a military court, he was sentenced to death for his role in the assassination attempt. The presidential refusal to grant clemency and his execution by firing squad made him the last person executed in that manner in France, a fact that increased his notoriety and sparked broad debate about justice, political terrorism, and the legacy of the Algerian–French conflict.
