Jean-Martin Charcot was a French neurologist and professor whose work in the second half of the 19th century established neurology as a scientific discipline. As head of the service and later of the Salpêtrière Institute, he transformed that hospital into a reference center for the study of nervous system diseases and trained a generation of influential clinicians, among them Sigmund Freud, Joseph Babinski and Pierre Janet. Charcot contributed to the characterization of several neurological diseases: he distinguished multiple sclerosis, described amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Charcot disease) and investigated aphasias, aneurysm and causes of cerebral hemorrhage. He published authoritative works, notably Leçons sur les maladies du système nerveux and the Iconographie de la Salpêtrière, which documented clinical signs and diagnostic methods. He also explored hypnosis as a method for investigating and treating nervous conditions, especially hysteria, a subject that placed him at the center of medical and cultural debates of his time. His legacy lies in the institutionalization of clinical neurology, in medical education and in his influence on modern neurological practice and research.
