Jean Metzinger was a French painter, theorist, critic and poet who became one of the central figures of Cubism in the early twentieth century. Initially influenced by neo‑Impressionism and later by Divisionism and Fauvism with a strong Cézannean presence, he moved between 1907 and 1909 toward a proto‑Cubist production that culminated in the full formulation of the movement. Together with Albert Gleizes, Metzinger wrote Du "Cubisme" (1912), the first major treatise on Cubism, and as early as 1910 he presented the idea of “mobile perspective” in his Note sur la Peinture — the notion of representing an object from multiple successive viewpoints, integrating space and time within the image. He was also a founder of the Section d'Or group and acted as a mediator among different Parisian artistic circles. During the First World War, Metzinger participated in the phase known as Crystal Cubism, pursuing mathematical geometrization and formal order that influenced the movement’s postwar revision. His works and writings helped to consolidate theoretical principles of pictorial modernism, leaving a legacy in the reflection on the relationship between representation, time and visual perception.
