Jean-Michel Rivat is a French lyricist, composer and singer whose career developed from the mid-1960s. A frequent partner of fellow lyricist Frank Thomas, Rivat helped create numerous hits in French popular music, writing for performers such as Claude François, Joe Dassin, France Gall, Sylvie Vartan and Michel Delpech. Among his early successes is “Bébé requin” (1967), and in the 1980s he contributed to the international hit “Voyage, voyage” (1986), performed by Desireless.

Over the course of his career, Rivat wrote lyrics across a wide range of styles and for many artists, from yé-yé to the pop of the 1970s and 1980s, taking part in shaping the sound of central figures in French song. His output often involved coauthorships and collaborations, which broadened his presence in the commercial and radio repertoire of the time.

On a personal level, his life clearly inspired some of his work: his marital separation partly motivated the lyrics of “Les Divorcés,” recorded by Michel Delpech. Recognized for his prolific output and for several hits that defined generations, Rivat left a legacy as the author of songs widely diffused across the Francophone repertoire.
