Jean Patou was a French fashion designer and founder of the house that bears his name, active in the early 20th century. Raised in a family tradition of tanning and furs, he established himself in Paris in 1910 and opened his first atelier in 1912. After the First World War he resumed the house and became known for transforming women’s fashion: he lengthened skirts, promoted sportswear and introduced practical pieces such as the cardigan, the knitted swimsuit and the tennis skirt, creating a new standard of functional elegance. Patou gained prominence by dressing sports figures such as Suzanne Lenglen and by innovating in the integration of fashion and accessories — the concept of the “designer tie,” neckties in fabrics from the women’s collection, is attributed to him. In the 1920s he also launched his line of perfumes, whose economic survival sustained the brand after the 1929 crisis. The perfume Joy, created in 1935, became a milestone for the house and one of the most celebrated in world perfumery. After his death in 1936, Maison Patou remained influential throughout the century, collaborating with noted perfumers and designers and leaving a legacy in the modernization of the female silhouette and in strengthening the link between haute couture and perfumery.
