Jean Paulhan was one of the leading French editors, critics and men of letters of the twentieth century. As director of the Nouvelle Revue Française (NRF) from 1925–1940 and 1946–1968, he influenced generations of writers and played an active role in the publishing circuit that shaped modern French literature. A member of the Académie française from 1963, his institutional standing reflected a long intellectual career.
Author of essays, studies and short stories, Paulhan was noted for his reflections on language and reading; Les Fleurs de Tarbes, ou La terreur dans les Lettres (1936) is regarded as a key work on the nature of literary discourse. His translations and editions of Malagasy poetry and his autobiographical writings also show an interest in other poetic traditions and in hybrid forms of writing.
During World War II he refused to collaborate with the occupation and joined the Resistance, a stance that brought him into conflict with the authorities and led to a brief arrest by the Gestapo. In the postwar period he relaunched influential publications and retained a prominent editorial position. His stance on the Algerian War and his support for the French military effort provoked controversy and ruptures with colleagues, leaving an ambiguous mark on his legacy.
