Jean Vigo was a French filmmaker whose brief career—cut short at 29—left a decisive mark on cinema. The author of only a few films, he was notable for formal daring and a poetic, subversive tone in works such as À propos de Nice (1930), Zéro de conduite (1933) and the classic L'Atalante (1934).
Born into a family connected to anarchism, Vigo channeled personal experiences and social sensitivity into films that blended documentary and fiction, proposing a “documented point of view” and helping bring about poetic realism in 1930s France. His social satire and aesthetic freedom drew attention through inventive images and a unique rhythm.
Censorship and commercial pressures affected the reception of his work during his lifetime—Zéro de conduite was banned and L'Atalante was reedited by its producer—but both films influenced later generations, particularly filmmakers of the Nouvelle Vague. Vigo’s legacy endures as a touchstone of narrative and visual innovation in the canon of world cinema.
