Jeanette Winterson is an English writer whose debut, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, brought her prominence by addressing sexual identity and life within a Pentecostal community. Largely semi‑autobiographical, the book won the Whitbread Prize for a First Novel and was adapted for award‑winning television; it became a touchstone in gender and sexuality studies and was included in school examinations in the United Kingdom.
Over the course of her career, Winterson has explored themes such as gender, sexual identity and the relationship between humans and technology, moving from autobiographical realism to formal experimentation and intertextual narratives. She has published novels including The Passion, The PowerBook and The Stone Gods, as well as plays, adaptations and books for children.
Honoured with literary prizes and distinctions — among them a BAFTA, the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize, Lambda Literary Awards, an OBE and a CBE — she has also taught and worked in radio broadcasting. Her work has been translated into nearly 20 languages and has influenced debates about contemporary literature, sexuality and narrative innovation.
Winterson cites modernist and European influences and is known for rewriting and incorporating earlier literary texts, aiming for a political commitment in her art: writing to change lives.
