Jeanne Modigliani was an art historian and biographer best known for her investigative work on the life and art of her father, the painter Amedeo Modigliani. Trained in Art History in Pisa, she initially focused on studies of Van Gogh before turning her attention to dispelling myths and legends surrounding her father. Her approach, grounded in documentary evidence and archival research, aimed to correct inaccuracies that had circulated since contemporary accounts and popular memoirs. Persecuted by the fascist regime because of her Jewish origins, Jeanne lived in France and joined the Resistance during the Nazi occupation, and was at one point imprisoned for political activity. Those experiences shaped her personal and intellectual life, placing her in a turbulent historical context that influenced her work and her networks within the Franco‑Italian cultural milieu. In 1958 she published Modigliani, senza leggenda, a work that challenged romanticized versions of her father and offered critical reassessments of his training, activities, and the tradition of anecdotes that labeled him a "cursed artist." In the following decades she organized major exhibitions and, in 1983, founded an association to preserve the artist’s archives, an effort intended to ensure the safeguarding and rigorous study of the family collection.
