Jehan Ariste Alain was a French organist and composer whose work, though brief, exerted a lasting influence on 20th‑century organ music. Born into a musical family, he trained at the Conservatoire de Paris with teachers such as Marcel Dupré and Paul Dukas, winning prizes in harmony, fugue and improvisation. His output, begun at age 18, includes pieces for organ, piano, choir and chamber ensembles, but he is best remembered for his organ compositions, with Litanies (1937) the most famous.

Alain’s language draws on Debussy‑era impressionism, Baroque renewal, jazz and Far Eastern influences, and also reflects his interests in dance and philosophy. His Trois danses and works like Le jardin suspendu display an introspective lyricism combined with rhythmic and timbral innovations for their time. Several contemporary composers paid tribute to him, and his sister Marie‑Claire Alain played a central role in promoting his repertoire.

Mobilized in World War II as a motorcycle courier for the French army, Alain was killed in action during the 1940 campaign. He left a body of work regarded by many as among the most original of the interwar period and influential on subsequent generations of organists and composers.
