Jesse Edward Curry was chief of police of Dallas from 1960 to 1966, a period that included the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963. He joined the force as a traffic officer in 1936 and rose through the department after training at traffic institutes and the FBI National Academy, gaining experience in nearly every division of the department. During the presidential motorcade, Curry occupied the lead car responsible for the safety of the president and vice president; he was the one who ordered men onto the overpass immediately after the shots. Under his command the police arrested Lee Harvey Oswald, but Oswald’s subsequent death at the police station drew criticism of Curry’s management for allowing the prisoner to be exposed to the media during the transfer. After leaving the chiefship for health reasons, he published a book in 1969 in which he expressed doubts about the official version of the assassination and the possibility of more than one shooter. He later worked as a security director and private investigator until more serious health problems. His role in that episode defined his career and public legacy, making him a central figure in the investigations and controversies surrounding the case.
