Jesse Owens, born James Cleveland Owens, was an American athlete whose career shaped the history of track and field. First noticed in high school and established at Ohio State University, he rose to prominence in the 1930s by setting multiple world records in the sprints and the long jump. At the 1936 Berlin Games he won four gold medals (100 m, 200 m, long jump and 4x100 m relay), an unprecedented achievement at the time.
His performance in Berlin took on great symbolic weight within the Nazi context, undermining racist ideology and casting Owens as a central figure in the struggle against prejudice in both Europe and the United States. Despite his sporting prestige, he faced racial discrimination at home: he lost scholarships and professional opportunities and received limited official recognition for much of his life.
After ending his competitive career, he worked in various roles and served as an American government representative on international sports missions in the 1950s. His legacy endures in athletics and in the social history of the twentieth century, later recognized by sports institutions and public memory.
