Jewel Akens was an American singer and record producer whose career was established in the 1960s. He began recording with groups, singing with ensembles such as The Medallions and The Four Dots, and in duets like "Jewel and Eddie" before pursuing a solo career. His biggest commercial success was the recording of "The Birds and the Bees" (1964), which reached high chart positions in the US, Canada and the UK and sold more than a million copies, earning a gold record.

Despite the single’s major success, subsequent records did not match its performance, and the follow-up, "Georgie Porgie," had only modest results. Throughout his career Akens remained active on the road from the mid-1960s onward, including performances honoring Sam Cooke, whom he regarded as a mentor. He also fronted a lineup that performed under the name The Coasters, though it did not include original members of the group.

Near the end of his performing career, Akens returned to the stage with a new version of the Dots between 2006 and 2011. His musical activity and his versions of songs such as "Little Bitty Pretty One" and "You Better Move On" are part of his legacy as a performer and producer from the 1960s pop-soul era.
