Jiang Qing was a Chinese actress and political figure, best known as Madame Mao. She began her artistic career under the stage name Lan Ping and worked in theater and film before joining communist circles in the 1930s. She became Mao Zedong’s personal secretary in the 1940s and in subsequent decades held prominent positions in cultural propaganda. During the Cultural Revolution she gained significant influence by directing cultural policies and promoting plays, posters and productions aligned with Maoist thought. In 1966 she joined the central organs of the revolutionaries and in 1969 secured a seat on the Politburo, becoming one of the most powerful figures in the final years of the Maoist regime. Together with others she formed the faction known as the Gang of Four, which controlled key media and propaganda institutions in Mao’s final years. After Mao’s death in 1976 she was arrested and tried; her conviction made her a symbol of the official responsibility assigned to part of the leadership for the repression and excesses of the Cultural Revolution. Her career is remembered both for her decisive role in the period’s cultural policy and for the controversy and conflicted legacy she left in China’s contemporary history.
