Jim Kerr (James Kerr) is a Scottish singer and songwriter, best known as the lead vocalist and co‑founder of the rock band Simple Minds. Emerging from the late‑1970s punk milieu, Kerr helped lead the band to both commercial and critical success, reaching multiple No. 1 albums in the UK and a No. 1 single in 1989 with "Belfast Child." His voice—often described as a rich baritone with a velvety timbre—became a signature element of the band's sound.
Alongside his work with the group, Kerr released a solo project under the name Lostboy! AKA Jim Kerr; the debut album appeared in 2010 and produced singles such as "Shadowland" and "She Fell in Love With Silence." The solo material explored a more electronic, studio‑oriented side distinct from Simple Minds' repertoire. Over the decades he has taken part in tours and benefit events, including initiatives connected to Nelson Mandela.
Born in Glasgow with Irish ancestry, Kerr has also been involved in business ventures and currently lives in Sicily, where he runs a hotel. His career is notable for its longevity, influence on 1980s British rock, and continued activity with Simple Minds at least through 2018.
