Marc Almond is an English singer and songwriter best known as the vocalist of the synth-pop duo Soft Cell and for a soulful voice and androgynous image that shaped the pop scene of the 1980s. With the worldwide success of "Tainted Love" (1981) he became a central figure in the new wave and electronic music of that era, also scoring hits such as "Bedsitter", "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" and, in his solo career, the UK number-one duet with Gene Pitney, "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart". After Soft Cell dissolved in 1984, Almond established a versatile solo career, moving between pop, cabaret and electronic influences, and exploring interpreted songs, Russian folk music and torch songs. His career includes collaborations with artists such as Jools Holland, Nico and Siouxsie Sioux, and a large discography that has helped sell more than 30 million records. Almond's career has also been marked by personal resilience: a serious motorcycle accident in 2004 left him in a coma for a month, an experience that led him to support causes related to traumatic brain injury. In recognition of his contribution to the arts, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2018 New Year Honours.
