Joachim Frederick of Brandenburg, a member of the House of Hohenzollern, was Elector of Brandenburg from 1598 until his death in 1608. Before succeeding his father John George, he administered the Archbishopric of Magdeburg from 1566 to 1598, a position that strengthened his authority and influence in the central regions of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1605 he became regent of the Duchy of Prussia, assuming a significant role in the political relations between Brandenburg and the Prussian territories. Under the Treaty of Grimnitz he also held titles linked to Pomerania — Duke of Stettin, Kashubia and other designations — although many of these titles were essentially symbolic. His political activity focused on preserving dynastic continuity: he married twice and had numerous children, among them John Sigismund, who succeeded him as Elector, and Anna Catherine, who became Queen of Denmark by marrying Christian IV. Joachim Frederick’s legacy showed the growing territorial and dynastic prominence of the Hohenzollerns at the turn of the 16th to the 17th century.
