Joachim von Ribbentrop was a diplomat and Foreign Minister of Nazi Germany from 1938 to 1945, holding a prominent position within the political apparatus of the Third Reich. Before that he served as ambassador in London (1935–1938) and was one of the architects of the alliances among Germany, Italy and Japan, as well as a direct participant in the negotiations that resulted in the non‑aggression pact with the Soviet Union known as the Ribbentrop–Molotov agreement. In foreign policy, Ribbentrop played a central role in the regime’s expansionist initiatives, including the policy that led to the annexation of Austria and Czechoslovakia, and was involved in planning the aggressions that triggered the Second World War. As head of Nazi diplomacy, he coordinated actions and directives that facilitated the deportation of Jews to the east and the cooperation of allied governments with the regime’s policies. After Germany’s defeat he was tried at Nuremberg and convicted of crimes against peace, war crimes and crimes against humanity. The death sentence was carried out in 1946. Ribbentrop’s legacy is associated with the use of diplomacy for aggression, repression and genocide under the Nazi regime.
