Joan Lowery Nixon was an American journalist and author who wrote more than 140 books for children and young adults. A journalism graduate of the University of Southern California, she began her career as a teacher and published her first children’s book in 1964. Her work focuses mainly on historical fiction and mystery, producing novels that combine suspense with youth-oriented themes handled with narrative rigor. Nixon received both critical and popular recognition: she was the only author to win four Edgar Allan Poe Awards, in addition to multiple nominations, and earned prizes such as the California Young Reader Medal and the Golden Spur from the Western Writers of America. Several of her books were adopted in school curricula, demonstrating a pedagogical influence. She collaborated with her husband, a geologist, on popular science works, and at least one of her novels was adapted for television. Her legacy endures in an extensive body of work for young readers, characterized by mystery plots set in historical contexts and lasting contributions to children’s and young adult literature.
