João Francisco Benedan, known as João Gordo, is a Brazilian musician and presenter identified as one of the pioneers of punk rock in the country. He has been the vocalist of the band Ratos de Porão since 1983, became a reference on the national heavy/punk scene and took part in several side projects and collaborations with metal and rock bands. Alongside his musical career, he built a presence on television as a presenter on channels such as MTV Brasil and Rede Record, hosting programs that moved between music, pop culture and entertainment, which broadened his notoriety beyond the stage. He received critical recognition, including the APCA Trophy for best presenter. Throughout his public life he faced health episodes that prompted changes in habits, and he developed activity in digital media and social projects, such as initiatives to distribute vegan food. He also published a biography and continued to release musical works and guest on other artists’ recordings. An influential and controversial figure in equal measure, his career combines musical work, television presence and public engagement, leaving a legacy in the spread of punk and the circulation of musical subcultures in Brazil.
