Joel J. Kupperman was a professor of philosophy at the University of Connecticut and the author of Six Myths about the Good Life, a work addressing human values and practices for a meaningful life. He first gained attention as a child prodigy on the Quiz Kids program, where his ability to perform complex mental arithmetic and his wide-ranging general knowledge brought him into popular culture and led to appearances in film and radio. A graduate of the University of Chicago with a doctorate from the University of Cambridge, Kupperman brought together interests in Western and Asian philosophy, with the Confucian tradition among the influences on his scholarly work. He began teaching at the University of Connecticut in 1960, was appointed to a full professorship in 1972, and became a respected voice in ethics and theories of the good life. His legacy blends an unusual course — from child prodigy to committed academic — with written contributions that seek to reassess common ideas about what is worth pursuing in human life. Kupperman’s life also inspired biographical accounts within his family and in contemporary culture.
