Johannes Georgi was a German meteorologist, glaciologist, and polar explorer, noted for his pioneering observations of atmospheric circulation and for leading inland research in Greenland. Trained in physics and mathematics, he worked closely with Alfred Wegener and took part in expeditions that aimed to install observation stations on the ice sheet, collecting unprecedented data on the polar climate. During the 1926–1929 campaigns he carried out high-altitude current measurements with radiosonde balloons, contributing to the earliest observations of the polar jet. In 1930–1931 he commanded the Eismitte station, where he maintained continuous meteorological observations under extreme conditions and later published accounts documenting life at the station and its challenges. His scientific and logistical leadership played a central role in the initiatives that led to the Second International Polar Year, helping to coordinate research efforts in the Arctic. Later accusations, connected to the fate of Wegener and other expedition members, marked his career and led to legal disputes that affected his reputation. Georgi left a legacy in polar observation techniques and in high-latitude meteorological records that influenced subsequent studies of atmospheric circulation and glaciology.
