Johannes Diderik van der Waals was a Dutch theoretical physicist whose work laid the foundations of molecular physics and thermodynamics. Presented in his 1873 dissertation, the van der Waals equation introduced parameters for molecular volume and the attractive forces between molecules, explaining the nonideal behavior of gases and the continuity between the gaseous and liquid states. This innovation made it possible to estimate molecular size and interactions from thermodynamic data and directly influenced later advances, such as the prediction of critical points and the liquefaction of gases. Van der Waals began his career as a teacher and became the first professor of physics at the University of Amsterdam in 1877, holding that chair until his retirement. His name also designates van der Waals forces and van der Waals radii, concepts central to understanding molecular interactions in chemistry and physics. The impact of his ideas was recognized in 1910 with the Nobel Prize in Physics “for his work on the equation of state for gases and liquids.” His scientific legacy established the basis for modern molecular science, guiding mathematical formulations of the thermodynamic properties of fluids and influencing experimentalists such as Heike Kamerlingh Onnes.
