John Amaechi is a psychologist, consultant and former professional basketball player, known both for his career on the court and for his work after retiring. He played college basketball in the United States and had a stint in the NBA, as well as spells with clubs in France, Italy, Greece and the United Kingdom. As a player he earned international recognition, including the 1996 Intercontinental Cup title with Panathinaikos, and represented the England national team, winning bronze at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. After retiring, he founded Amaechi Performance Systems, a company focused on leadership development, communication and organizational diversity, and regularly worked with British media as a sports commentator and presenter. He is a member of professional psychology associations in the UK and the US and served as a senior fellow at a university center devoted to emotional literacy. Amaechi attracted public attention in 2007 when he came out as gay in his autobiography Man in the Middle, becoming one of the first high-profile athletes to do so and an influential voice in discussions of diversity and inclusion in sport. His legacy combines sporting achievements, academic contribution and activism for equality.
