John Ashbery was an American poet and teacher, a central figure in the so-called “New York School” and one of the most influential voices in postwar American poetry. Known for long, linguistically dense poems that explore language play and associative thinking, his work challenged conventions and drew both critical admiration and difficulty for general readers. A graduate of Harvard and Columbia, he also worked as an art critic, translator and editor, spending a formative period in France in the 1950s and 1960s, where he worked with literary journals and translated authors such as Rimbaud and Raymond Roussel. His career included academic posts at institutions such as Brooklyn College and Bard College, and active participation on editorial boards and in literary magazines. Honored with major awards — including the Pulitzer — Ashbery served as Poet Laureate of the State of New York and was a member of literary and academic societies. His legacy endures in his influence on generations of poets, in spreading experimental poetry in the United States, and in promoting an aesthetic that treats language as a field of invention.
