Marcel Duchamp was a Franco‑American artist whose work and stance radically changed artistic practice in the 20th century. Initially associated with movements such as Romanticism, Expressionism and Cubism, he gained attention for paintings like Nude Descending a Staircase, which sparked controversy by suggesting motion and by satirizing Cubist conventions.

He is best remembered for inventing the readymade: everyday objects relocated to an exhibition context and signed as artworks. Famous—and contentious—examples like Fountain made visible the idea that the meaning of art can lie in selection and conceptual framing rather than solely in manual craftsmanship.

His most ambitious project, The Large Glass (The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even), consumed years and consolidated his interest in mechanisms, movement and a critique of “retinal art,” privileging thought about the work. At the same time, Duchamp cultivated an artistic persona—including the figure Rrose Sélavy—and devoted himself to studies of chess and optical perception.

Duchamp’s legacy is broad: he influenced Dada, Surrealism, Conceptual Art and many later avant‑gardes by shifting the emphasis to concept and to questioning what constitutes an artwork.
