John Dickson Carr was an American writer of detective novels and short stories, often published under the pseudonyms Carter Dickson, Carr Dickson and Roger Fairbairn. A graduate of Haverford, he lived for long periods in England, where he set most of his stories and created his two best-known detectives: Dr. Gideon Fell and Sir Henry Merrivale, characteristically English figures who exemplify the classic style of the mystery Golden Age. Carr became renowned as a master of the so-called impossible crime or locked-room mystery, favoring ingenious plots and puzzles difficult to explain. The Hollow Man (1935), a novel starring Dr. Fell, is widely regarded as his masterpiece and has been chosen by experts as the best locked-room mystery of all time. Other notable works include The Crooked Hinge and The Burning Court, which combine historical, supernatural and pastiche elements. Acknowledged for his contribution to the genre, he received two Special Edgar Awards and the title of Grand Master from the Mystery Writers of America; he was also one of the few Americans admitted to the British Detection Club. In addition to contemporary novels, he wrote historical mysteries and contributed to the Holmesian tradition alongside Adrian Conan Doyle.
