Sir Arthur John Gielgud was an English actor and theatre director whose career spanned eight decades, establishing him as one of the central figures of twentieth‑century British theatre. A member of the Terry theatrical dynasty, he became known for his work in the Shakespearean repertoire at the Old Vic (1929–1931) and achieved fame for performances such as Hamlet as well as for comic roles like John Worthing in The Importance of Being Earnest. Alongside his acting, Gielgud directed productions in the West End and formed his own company at the Queen’s Theatre, expanding his influence as a stage director. From the 1930s onward he shone both in the West End and on Broadway, appearing in classics and contemporary plays. His film career gathered momentum later, encompassing more than sixty films with notable work in Becket, Chimes at Midnight and Arthur, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also received a Golden Globe, two BAFTAs and completed the rare EGOT cycle by earning an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony. Renowned for his voice and Shakespearean mastery, he worked extensively in radio and television and served as President of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art from 1977 to 1989. He was knighted in 1953 and left a lasting legacy in English theatre.
