John Grey Gorton was an Australian politician who served as the country's 19th Prime Minister from 1968 to 1971. A former serviceman and farmer, he rose to prominence in Parliament as a senator for Victoria and became the only member of the Senate to lead the government, later transferring to the House of Representatives to conform to political convention. During his ministerial career in the governments of Robert Menzies and Harold Holt, Gorton held portfolios including Navy, Works, Education and Science, which established him as an active figure in industrial and technological policy. As Prime Minister, he kept Australia involved in the Vietnam War while beginning the withdrawal of troops and promoted the revival of the national film industry. An individualistic politician with shifting views, Gorton moved from staunch anti-communism to more progressive stances on social issues: he authored the motion that led to the federal decriminalization of homosexuality in the territories. His government achieved successes and provoked controversies, and is often regarded as transitional, with a legacy marked by centralization, economic nationalism and a leadership style that divided his own party. Outside public office, he served as an Air Force pilot in World War II, returned to parliamentary life as an influential figure and later worked as a political commentator before retiring from public life.
