John McFee is an American musician known as a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer associated with rock and country-rock. He began as a steel guitarist on notable recordings such as Van Morrison's album Tupelo Honey and took part in important late-1970s sessions, including work with Elvis Costello on My Aim Is True. He became better known for his long association with The Doobie Brothers, joining the group in 1979 to replace Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. With the Doobies he debuted on the album One Step Closer and contributed songs including the instrumental "South Bay Strut" and the title track co-written with drummer Keith Knudsen. After the band's temporary breakup in 1982, McFee and Knudsen co-founded Southern Pacific, a country-rock project that included musicians such as former Creedence Clearwater Revival bassist Stu Cook. McFee returned to The Doobie Brothers in 1993, appearing on later releases such as Sibling Rivalry (2000), where he also sang on tracks like "Angels of Madness." His career includes work in bands, studio sessions, and live touring, establishing him as a multi-instrumentalist and versatile collaborator on the American music scene.
