John Hancock was a merchant, statesman, and prominent figure in the American Revolution. He inherited and expanded his uncle’s prosperous mercantile business in Boston, becoming one of the wealthiest men in the Thirteen Colonies; his fortune and standing funded and sustained his political activity in the years before the conflict with Great Britain. He presided over the Second Continental Congress at the time of the Declaration of Independence and famously signed the Declaration with a prominent signature, a gesture that made his name synonymous with “signature” in the United States. He was also among the signers of the Articles of Confederation and worked for Massachusetts’s ratification of the Constitution in 1788. At the military and local level, he served as commander‑in‑chief of the Massachusetts militia and led troops in wartime actions, and he served as the first and later the third governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Although he is often linked to accusations of smuggling because of the Liberty sloop affair, the accuracy of that characterization is disputed. His legacy combines the roles of revolutionary political leader, influential businessman, and public symbol of American independence.
