John Harvey Kellogg was a physician, businessman, and Progressive Movement activist in the United States, best known for directing the Battle Creek Sanitarium, an institution that combined a spa, hospital, and hydrotherapy treatments. While leading the sanitarium, he promoted a holistic approach to health—vegetarianism, intestinal hygiene, exercise, sunbathing, and abstention from alcohol, tobacco, and sexual excess—and treated both wealthy patients and those without means. Kellogg was among the early advocates of the germ theory of disease and of linking the intestinal flora to health, a stance that influenced preventive medical practices. He also developed and marketed vegetarian foods served at the sanitarium; these initiatives helped spur the emergence of the breakfast cereal industry, later associated with the brand created by his brother Will. Throughout his life he published extensively on health and science and sought to reconcile medical knowledge with unorthodox religious views, which ultimately brought him into conflict with leaders of his church and led to his institutional separation. In his later decades he advocated for eugenics policies and racial segregation, positions that controversially mark his legacy.
