John Benedict Hillerman was an American actor whose career ranged from the theatre to film and television. Trained on the New York stage, he played more than a hundred roles before moving to Hollywood in the late 1960s, where he joined casts of films directed by Peter Bogdanovich and appeared in notable titles such as Chinatown and Blazing Saddles. His fame reached its peak with the role of British valet Jonathan Quayle Higgins III on the television series Magnum, P.I. (1980–1988). His performance, marked by cultured English and comic authoritarian traits, earned Hillerman multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, winning each award in different years, and shaped his public image. Beyond Magnum, he built a steady television career with guest and recurring roles on series such as Ellery Queen, One Day at a Time and The Hogan Family, as well as in films and TV movies. He retired from screen work in 1999 and is remembered as a versatile performer, particularly for his ability to turn a supporting character into a central figure of television pop culture.
