John Henry Hoeven III is an American banker and politician, a member of the Republican Party, who has served since 2011 as the senior senator for North Dakota. Before the Senate, he was the state’s 31st governor (2000–2010), during which he promoted economic diversification and expansion of the energy sector, contributing to strong state GDP growth, job creation, and more robust financial reserves. A Dartmouth graduate with an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management, Hoeven worked for decades in banking, including executive roles at First Western Bank & Trust and as president of the Bank of North Dakota (1993–2000). His business background and ties to the financial sector are reflected in his status as one of the wealthier members of the Senate. In the Senate, Hoeven is active on committees dealing with agriculture, energy, natural resources, and Native American affairs, and has chaired the Committee on Indian Affairs. His public career combines conservative stances on issues such as security and firearms with more moderate positions on matters like education and infrastructure, where he supported the large 2021 investment package.
