John Cornelius Houbolt was an American aerospace engineer whose persistent advocacy of the mission mode known as lunar orbit rendezvous (LOR) proved decisive for the success of the Apollo program. Working at the Langley Research Center and facing strong institutional resistance, Houbolt argued that LOR would allow men to land on the Moon and return them with a single Saturn V rocket, saving the time and resources essential to meet the presidential goal of reaching the Moon in the 1960s. His efforts included technical studies and a forceful letter to senior agency leaders, a move that helped influence the adoption of the concept in 1962. After that decision, mission design and the development of the Lunar Module were guided by that approach, and Houbolt was invited to observe the Apollo 11 landing in Mission Control. Over the course of his career he received the NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal, became a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and had his papers deposited at the University of Illinois, where he had studied. His work is remembered as an example of technical impact and professional courage in the lunar achievement.
