John James Audubon

Photo: Reproduction

John James Audubon was a naturalist, ornithologist and illustrator of French family background who became a central figure in the history of scientific illustration of North American birds. His best-known work, The Birds of America, gathered hundreds of plates of high technical and aesthetic quality, earning him scientific prestige and popularity with both European and North American patrons and the public. Throughout his life Audubon used field methods uncommon for his time: he observed birds in their natural habitats and composed realistic poses, although he relied on hunting to obtain specimens for drawing. This combination of visual exactitude and pictorial sensibility set his work apart from illustrations based solely on taxidermy collections. Commercial and critical success allowed him to fund further expeditions and to publish more affordable editions of his work, as well as to collaborate with his sons on later projects such as Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America. His legacy endures in the iconography of ornithology and in popular culture, influencing collectors, institutions and the tradition of nineteenth-century naturalist publications.
