John Kenneth Stille was an American chemist best known for discovering the Stille reaction, a key palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling transformation. His work enabled efficient formation of carbon–carbon bonds, with broad impact on organic synthesis and the pharmaceutical industry. A graduate of the University of Arizona with a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois under Carl Shipp Marvel, Stille began his academic career at the University of Iowa and joined Colorado State University in 1977. His research established the methodology that bears his name and influenced generations of synthetic chemists. The significance of his work is reflected in the role the Stille reaction plays among the cross-coupling reactions that reshaped modern organic chemistry; contemporaries regarded him as a potential Nobel candidate. Stille died prematurely in 1989, by then internationally recognized for his lasting contributions to organic chemistry.
